I am working on a series of paintings inspired by the four classical elements: earth, air, fire, and water.
It is a tumultuous time in human history. Focusing on the poetic nuances observed in the most basic wonders of the natural world has grounded me and given me hope.
Like many of you, I have always had a special affinity for water. It appears often in my imagination and in my writings. I love to swim and sail. I have to live near an ocean, lake, or river, or I feel trapped. The idea of water and what it symbolizes, combined with the physical forms it takes, intrigues me.
On a recent trip to Greenland, water, in all of its states, was visible everywhere. I was fascinated by patterns made by the wakes of the ship, the icebergs and glaciers constantly morphing. From the tiniest raindrops forming shapes on the ship railing, to the immense artic ice cap we flew over on our way home, the visual beauty of forms made solely of water was astonishing.
I paint with oil paint. For me, its liquid softness in application, and its depth of tone is more beautiful than any other medium. Sometimes I add collage or other elements. It’s my attempt to internalize the smell, and feel, and the visual beauty of water.
